Fire & Ice Week 2 NFL Predictions
September 15, 2016
Week One was an interesting week, to say the least. The biggest surprise coming when the Tom Brady-less Patriots (also without Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski) defeated the Arizona Cardinals, one of the top NFC teams who many people believe are poised to have another deep playoff run this year. Jimmy Garoppolo played a great game, but will he continue it this week? Our records from the Week One games are listed below and we will keep a running tally throughout the season, so check back every week to see just how accurate our picks really are.
Jake: 7-9
Grayson: 6-10
Jets @ Bills
Jake: Both teams enter with 0-1 records, following close loses. These are two evenly matched teams. I expect the Buffalo offense that only scored seven points last week to bounce back, led by running back LeSean McCoy. Also look for a big game from Tyrod Taylor. On the Jets side, their explosive receiving corps struggled to get open and catch the ball. I imagine they will have similar results against a strong Buffalo secondary. BUF:20 NYJ:13
Grayson: I didn’t expect both of these teams to enter Week Two 0-1. The Bills’ best receiver, Sammy Watkins, is fighting nagging pain in his foot and it will be interesting seeing how he plays on it or if he’s even at 100% by game time. I think the Jets will win, thanks to a better defense and receiver core. NYJ:28 BUF:23
49ers @ Panthers
Jake: The 49ers dominated the Rams last week, shutting them out en route to a 28-0 victory. That won’t continue this week. The Panthers are coming off a heartbreaking Week One defeat to the Denver Broncos, where kicker Graham Gano missed a last second field goal. I’m expecting a huge game from Cam Newton. The 49ers will get a taste of their own medicine, as they fail to put a single point on the board. CAR:35 SF:0
Grayson: The 49ers completely shocked me, I wasn’t expecting such utter dominance to be shown, even if it was only against the LA Rams. Carlos Hyde and the 49ers run game was fantastic, but I can’t see the Panthers and Cam Newton going 0-2. Panthers win at home. CAR:33 SF:20
Cowboys @ Redskins
Jake: If Washington plays anything like they did last week, they won’t win a single game this year. Luckily for them I don’t think they will; however I think the Cowboys will come out on top in this one. Washington couldn’t stop the run last week look for Ezekiel Elliott to have a big game. Also watch and see if Washington let’s Josh Norman follow Dez Bryant around the field. If not it will be another long day for Bashaud Breeland, who is coming off a week where Antonio Brown schooled him. DAL:28 WAS:14
Grayson: Bashaud Breeland looked like a piece of bread you forgot to take out of the toaster a half hour ago. He got absolutely scorched and had the opportunity for three interceptions while since his hand/eye coordination was a 0/10 on monday night, he only came down with one. The redskins run defense was atrocious, that being said Deangelo williams is more experienced and better than Ezekiel Elliott right now and wont fair as well. Kirk should have a bounce back game as the Redskins top the Cowboys in a shootout. WAS:38 DAL:24
Bengals @ Steelers
Jake: Game of the week right here. I can’t wait to see this game, it’s going to be physical, high-scoring, and did I mention physical? After a late hit from Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict (Which earned him a 3 game suspension) knocked star receiver Antonio Brown out for the playoffs with a concussion all but ending the Steelers Super Bowl chances. Pittsburgh comes in looking for revenge, and they’ll get it. Look for a huge game from Brown. On the Bengals side AJ Green will do what he can to keep Cincy in the game; however, his efforts won’t be enough. PIT:31 CIN:27
Grayson: Both teams looked fantastic in week one, A.J. Green had one of the biggest games of his career and Antonio Brown was plain and simply a stud, Big Ben and Andy Dalton are both great quarterbacks and both defences will make things hard to become a 40+ point shootout between the two AFC powerhouses, i like the Bengals backfield a little more than Deangelo Williams. Overall I think the Steelers receiver corps is better and Ben Roethlisberger is harder to bring down than the Red Rifle, Andy Dalton. PIT:27 CIN:24
Saints @ Giants
Jake: Remember this game last year? Over 100 total points were scored, over 1,000 yards of offense was racked up. Don’t expect that again, you can expect another offensive shootout again though. The Saints secondary took a big hit when cornerback Delvin Breaux was knocked out with a broken fibula. The Saints will now have an undrafted free agent covering Odell Beckham Jr. I would be surprised if Beckham doesn’t eclipse 200 receiving yards. Don’t be fooled though, the Saints offense is just as high-powered led by future Hall of Famer Drew Brees, and rising star Brandin Cooks. I think the Saints lack of depth in their secondary will cost them this one. Also remember they are playing on the road. The Saints struggle on the road, especially when the game is outdoors. NYG:41 NO:27
Grayson: This game will more than likely just leave the defenses back in the locker room. Drew Brees and Eli Manning are about to give fantasy owners a present along with showing some love to their receivers.I assume tv viewers should be prepared to watch open air space taken advantage of as this game should be an absolute fly zone. A last second field goal wins it. NO:41 NYG:38
Dolphins @ Patriots
Jake: Miami lost a heartbreaker at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks last week. They won’t come that close this week. Jimmy Garappolo played a fantastic game, last Sunday. Look for similar success this week as he takes on a weak Dolphins secondary. With the possibility of Rob Gronkowski returning, I like New England’s chances this week. NE:24 MIA:14
Grayson: I’ll be honest, Garappolo looked good, but so did the Dolphins. Even though the dolphins lost a close game to the Seattle Seahawks they made it close and were one Kenny Stills catch away from being 1-0. I think Jarvis Landry will connect up with Ryan Tannehill on double digit occasions as they shock the nation and bring both franchises to 1-1. MIA:27 NE:23
Chiefs @ Texans
Jake: This is an interesting game. The Texans new-look offense under-whelmed throughout most of their last contest with the Bears, but came alive in the second half to grab them a victory. The Chiefs are hoping super-star running back Jamaal Charles will be a go this week, coming off a torn ACL he suffered last year. This one will come down to who can run the ball better. With the Chiefs giant question mark at running back, I like the Texans chances to jump to 2-0 on the season. HOU:27 KC:17
Grayson: Chiefs squeaked out an incredible comeback week one, the Texans beat the Bears. Beating the Bears is more of just letting them self destruct while minimizing your own team’s mistakes. I think the Chiefs defense can compete with the young Texans offense, even with superstars Lamar Miller and DeAndre Hopkins. I think the KC can’t keep up with the speed in Houston as they lose a close one. HOU:24 KC:17
Titans @ Lions
Jake: Matt Stafford was a man on a mission last week, as he shredded the Colts defense and led a last minute comeback. I expect he will find similar success against a depleted Titans defense. The Titans offense struggled to do anything against a smothering Vikings defense. They will do better this week, but it won’t be enough. As the Lions will jump to a 2-0 record to start the season.
DET:31 TEN:21
Grayson: The Lions blew that game last week. They were a team of two halves and had an amazing first half, if they carry that into this game they should win by double digits. The lions running backs won’t repeat their monster game this week but I bet Henry and Murray will reproduce the spark that the Titans offense needs to make the game close. Stafford throws for 350 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Lions out last the Titans. DET: 35 TEN:26
Ravens @ Browns
Jake: The Browns are just hilariously bad. It’s hard to find anything good to say about this team, as they just lost their starting quarterback for an extended period of time. Meanwhile the Ravens looked back to their old ways, on Sunday. By playing fantastic defense and doing just enough on offense. Cleveland shouldn’t do much to disrupt them, as Baltimore will stomp their way to a 2-0 start. BAL: 27 CLE: 3
Grayson: Cleveland lost RG3 due to a shoulder injury and that brings Josh McCown to the helm of the offense. Gary Barnidge should have better game than last week, but it will take more than a week for the Dog Pound to get adjusted to their new starting playcaller. The Ravens defense will keep them ahead and win them the game. BAL:17 CLE:13
Seahawks @ Rams
Jake:The Rams looked pitiful against a team who many including myself believe to be a front-runner for the first pick in the draft, in the San Francisco 49ers. Things get about a hundred times harder with the Seattle Seahawks coming to town. On the flip side LA has had recent success against the Seahawks, as they normally give them a run for their money. With Russell Wilson questionable to play with an ankle injury the Rams have a chance to win this one. It all starts with Todd Gurley who struggled mightily last week. Even with the chance of no Russell Wilson I’ll take the high road and bank on Seattle pulling away in a close one. SEA:17 LA:13
Grayson: The Rams were the worst team that played week one. Im convinced my 11 year old brothers little league team could have competed better than the Rams. They will score for the first time since 1994 and their fans will have a chance to cheer about something. The Rams seem to always beat the Seahawks regardless of the two teams records, so this should be an interesting game to keep an eye on. I think the Rams will still fall short in the end however. SEA:24 LA:13
Buccaneers @ Cardinals
Jake: Did you see the game Tampa Bay played last week? Who saw that one coming, I sure didn’t. But let’s calm down, it was just the Falcons. Things get much harder with a matchup in Arizona, who were a good snap, and field goal away from defeating the New England Patriots. I expect Arizona to come out motivated and ready to avenge their last second loss, and I think they will. The Buccaneers are team to watch out for this year though. ARI:27 TB:20
Grayson:Tampa had a great game and the Cardinals did not, they played better than most NFL teams but still haven’t reached their full potential. The Cardinals running back, David Johnson, proved his rookie season wasn’t a fluke with a solid game against a fair defense in the Patriots. Jameis WInston had one of his best career games but Arizona and Atlanta are very different defenses, a good game to watch as the Cardinals and the Bucs both will go to 1-1. ARI: 35 TB:23
Jaguars @ Chargers:
Jake: Jacksonville played a great game against a tough Packers team last week. The Chargers enter losing their best offensive weapon Keenan Allen to a torn ACL. Look for Jacksonville to jump on that with lots of blitzing and man coverage, as they try to pressure Philip Rivers and force him to throw into tight coverage. I think this young Jaguars team will come out with a huge victory against San Diego. JAC: 31 SD:17
Grayson: The Jaguars came to play last week and could have one if they had converted a crucial 4th and 1 late in the 4th quarter. On the other side the Chargers lost their best receiver and arguably best player on their roster, Keenan Allen to an ACL tear in his right knee. The Jaguars defense should lock down a lacking Chargers offense while Blake Bortles and the rest of the Jag’s offensive arsenal should put up big points and improve to 1-1. JAC:42 SD:20
Falcons @ Raiders
Jake: Oakland’s new look defense hardly looked like the unit they were hyped up to be against the Saints. That being said the Saints possess arguably the most explosive offense in football. The Falcons struggled to get much of anything going last week, I imagine they’ll find similar results as they travel to the Black Hole. I’m expecting Latavius Murray to gash this weak Falcons defense early often, as the Raiders pick up their second win on the season. OAK:31 ATL:13
Grayson: Oaklands offense lived up to the hype. The Raiders defense was filled with holes but their offense however and their risky decision to go for two late in the game to run away with a win. The saints have a better offense than the Falcons however and the Raiders defense should fair better against them on sunday. Expect Cooper, Carr, and Murray to all put up big stat lines this week. OAK:34 ATL:23
Colts @ Broncos
Jake: This game no longer carries the headline of Manning vs Luck, I still expect it to be a very entertaining game however. Andrew Luck leads his high-powered offense into battle against Denver’s smothering defense. Trevor Siemian played a pretty solid game against a great Panthers defense look for him to build on that against the non-existent Colts defense. It’s hard for me to say the Colts will fall to 0-2, but I think that’s exactly what will happen as the Denver defense shuts them down. DEN:20 IND:7
Grayson: Denver’s defense looked amazing and didn’t miss a beat since winning the super bowl last season. The Colts were the equivalent of a sleeping giant, playing like trash in one half, then waking up and playing like a top 5 team the next. Andrew Luck will play decently but the Broncos will move to 2-0 as their offense improves as a unit. DEN:30 IND: 27
Packers @ Vikings
Jake: This should be a good one as the Vikings debut their new stadium (which is pretty awesome, if you haven’t checked it out I suggest you do.). Unfortunately for the Vikings I expect they will lose their opener in the new stadium. With no Teddy Bridgewater we saw last week they were entirely too one-dimensional, as they couldn’t even get future Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson going as he averaged a mere two yards per carry. Don’t expect too much offense in this one as Green Bay takes it over the Vikings. GB: 22 MIN:14
Grayson: Green Bay looked great against the Jags and the only reason the Vikings won was because of their Defense. Adrian Peterson will get going and provide some offense but Green Bay will win in the second close game of sunday night football this year. GB: 24 MIN:23
Eagles @ Bears
Jake: This game just doesn’t interest me at all. Two fairly boring teams, I won’t be watching this one; however, Carson Wentz looked very good in his NFL debut. But let’s calm down, it was against the Browns. Who are a glorified dumpster fire at this point. Meanwhile Chicago played the Texans tough last week, look for Alshon Jeffery to have a big game has the Bears top the Eagles.
CHI: 27 PHI:14
Grayson: Philadelphia looked fantastic….against Cleveland, the Bears looked like the Bears, blowing a lead, and losing the game. The Eagles will take advantage of a average defense and the Bears will flounder on live tv, only having a few successful drives. If Alshon Jeffrey and Jeremy Langford show up to play it will give them the win but i’m not so sure how likely that will be. PHI:27 CHI:23
