200 for Lunch: Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a little underwhelming after the buildup for its release, but it shows promise.

The show’s first episode followed the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). The premise for the show is that they will be working together to fight the Flag-Smashers, the MCU’s most recent villains, yet the pair did not meet throughout the entire episode and the Flag-Smashers only showed up briefly. Most of the episode was just setting up exposition (which it does well), but it left the whole episode feeling kind of lacking.

The show takes place post-Snap, and shows the two main characters are dealing with it in their own way. Most notably, it deals with the death of Captain America and how the world is moving on from that. While the episode seems to mainly be setting up the series, there were a few interesting moments, particularly a surprising reveal at the end.

All the exposition essentially means you have an hour of not very much happening– there weren’t any real edge-of-your-seat moments. Hopefully, the show will pick up the pace and become more exciting as the season moves along.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier is currently streaming on Disney+, with an episode set to come out on Fridays.
