Students Practice Diplomacy With Model U.N.

Model U.N. is run by students to discuss current events and politics. Then they suggest ways or take theories of how to fix the problem and put it into action.

Model U.N. started here in 2012-2013 . “We started out small,” Model U.N. president junior Ayoade Balogun said. “But we have grown to 40-50 people.”

“We have little conferences to very big conferences, and you can come as little or as much as you want.” club sponsor Kirsten Thornhill said. “It’s very laid back and fun.”

The club gets to go to many conferences from places like UVA to New York.

“The conferences go from very small to very big conferences,” Thornhill said.

“The trips are awesome! You go to many colleges and you make many new friends,” Balogun said.

The first trip of the year will be to UVA from Nov. 13-15 and 21 students are planning on attending. Students will prepare position papers to represent different countries at the conference as they serve on committees.

“The club is full of people who just started or people who have been there since the start,” Balogun said. “If you aren’t experienced, that’s okay. Model U.N. teaches you many things about politics, learning how to become more aware, what you can really do, and you become more passionate,” Balogun said

“I love it! I’m not a huge part in planning or hosting, but I still love sponsoring it for the same reason I love coaching – it gives me the opportunity to meet a wide variety of students other than the students that I have had in class, and I get to help students, have great learning experiences outside of the classroom and AHS students are awesome!” Thornhill said. “Why wouldn’t I want to get to know as many as possible? It’s also fun working with my co-sponsor and partner-in-crime Ms. Karnaze.

“Model U.N. is so much fun, and I would totally recommend it!” Balogun said.
