After placing second in the conference championship, the varsity softball team went to regionals for the first time in four years during the 2017 spring season.
“The best thing that I liked is that our girls competed this year,” varsity head coach Charlie Scott said. “They played really hard and we were in it all of the time.”
Scott said that this was one of the best seasons that they have had in a few years. He explained that one of the reasons for this was that the athletes played together and as one team.
Scott also said that everybody has a key role and a major part of the team, but that it all starts with pitching in softball.
“The pitcher has to able to control the game. Ellie Cain is our starting pitcher and she pitched in every game this year,” Scott said. “She was 14 and 8 on the year, and when Ellie has control, hits her spots and does the things that we ask her to do, it all starts there.”
He said that while there is no true star player, the game starts with pitching and everybody has to play good defense behind that.
“Our future is bright,” Scott said. “Next year will be a very demanding season from my part. I’m going to push them very hard next year, harder than I pushed them this year to be more successful than we were this season.”
The team will lose three seniors after this season, one of them being a starter. However, Scott feels confident in the varsity team that he has coming back and the players that may be coming up from the JV team.
“We have some very athletic, young players on the JV team that are looking forward to hopefully come up, and if not coming up next year then in the next couple of years, that look promising and I’m thinking will compete,” Scott said.
Despite having one of the best seasons since the time Scott has been coaching, Scott said that he is looking forward to future years to go even further and be even more successful.
