The Revolution Staff brought back the holiday candy taste test to round out 2024. We tried interesting candies from Elf-inspired Goldfish to hot dog-flavored candy canes from Archie McPhee to several holiday-oriented Oreos.
Bigfoot Flavored Candy Canes (4.75/10)
Yusur: Tastes like detergent or wood polish. 4/10 – water makes it worse!
Johanna: Tastes like laundry detergent. 4/10
Carrington: It tastes like a candle or grass. 5/10
Owen: Tastes like grass with laundry detergent poured on it. 4/10
Sienna: Tastes like minty soap. 7/10
Nuolin: Tastes like how soap smells– not very woody or piney. 4/10
Jacob: This candy cane has a minty, pine-like taste with a hint of citrus. There is just enough citrus taste to keep you invested, but not enough to obscure the gross, stale woody flavor. 4/10.
Eva: That MIGHT be a leaf. 6/10.
Hot Dog Flavored Candy Canes (1.25/10)
Sienna: Smells burnt; tastes like expired food. 0/10, would not eat again
Owen: Tastes like the smell of skunk spray. 0/10
Eva: That is heinous. 1/10
Carrington: Smells like dog treats and tastes like dog treats. 1/10
Johanna: Smells like dog food. 1/10
Jacob: On first impressions, it smells a little bit like roast beef from a deli. After surpassing an initial gag reflex to the dark, smoky, and skunky taste, the aftertaste is a little less severe. 3/10
Yusur: Smells and tastes like a dog treat. 1/10
Nuolin: Tastes like a Chinese hot dog, but sweeter than usual. 3/10
Sour Cream and Onion Flavored Candy Canes (2.19/10)
Sienna: Smells like the sour cream and onion chips; tastes sour and like onion. 0/10
Carrington: Smells like an onion and tastes like an onion. 1/10
Nuolin: Smells like what it describes; tastes like plastic onion doused in sugar. 1/10
Owen: Tastes like sour cream and onion dip with a lot of milk and sugar in it. 2.5/10
Yusur: Smells exactly like sour cream and onion; tastes only like onion. 3/10
Johanna: It only tastes like onion. 1/10
Eva: Very accurate, not bad at all, probably wouldn’t eat again 7/10.
Jacob: I have to say, they nailed the smell. I’m not a huge fan of sour cream and onion in general, so this one was nor for me. 2/10.
Dante’s Inferno Candy Canes (5.56/10)
Sienna: I can’t really smell it, no taste, just spice. 6/10
Carrington: Doesn’t have a smell. Tastes like cinnamon, but more. 4/10
Johanna: It wasn’t that spicy. 5/10
Yusur: It doesn’t smell like anything at all; tastes only a little sweet but mainly spicy. 4/10
Nuolin: Smells like nothing, but it’s more on the orange side. It tastes exactly like hotpot spice for some reason, but its not very spicy so negative points. 6/10
Owen: Tastes like the one chip challenge. Good with the spice level though; they nailed it on that part. 7/10
Eva: Not a lot of taste, entirely spice 7.5/10.
Jacob: After an initial fake plastic-y taste, a strong cinnamon spice flavor emerges. It is pretty hot, and leaves a lingering burn on the tongue. Not much taste, just heat. 5/10.
Jalapeno Flavored Candy Canes (4.5/10)
Nuolin: Smells like pepper jack cheese from afar; straight jalapeno right in front of you. Tastes like a sad bell pepper with no spice. 2/10
Sienna: Has a really strong pepper smell; tastes like pepper. 4/10
Eva: It tastes like a pepper, but isn’t spicy enough. 7/10.
Carrington: Smells really strong of pepper; tastes not that bad, like a bell pepper. 5/10
Owen: Smells exactly like jalapeno, but tastes fruity-ish like a bell pepper. 5/10
Johanna: Tastes like a bell pepper. 3/10
Yusur: My nose is tingling, it smells strong. The flavor is actually disappointing– too mild. 5/10
Jacob: Tastes and smells like a green bell pepper. Not great, but not nearly as bad as the sour cream and onion. 5/10
Oreo Candy Canes (8.13/10)
Eva: That is actually good– not as good as a real Oreo, though. (8/10)
Sienna: Smells like Oreos; tastes like Oreos. 10/10
Carrington: Smells like a doughnut; tastes like an Oreo doughnut. 8/10
Owen: Reminds me of an Oreo Dunkin’ Donut, pretty good. 8/10
Johanna: It tastes like chocolate. 7/10
Yusur: Tastes beautiful, smells beautiful, but doesn’t taste like an Oreo cookie. 9/10
Jacob: Tastes like an Oreo coffee. It’s decent, but it’s just different enough from an Oreo to be a little unsettling. 7/10.
Nuolin: Smells like cookies and cream. Lives up to the taste, but it has a weird aftertaste that’s negligible. 8/10
Elf-Edition Goldfish (9.25/10)
Johanna: It’s good! It tastes like maple syrup. 9/10
Sienna: Smells like maple, tastes like maple 10/10
Nuolin: Smells like faint honey crackers. Has a good crunch and sweet taste of honey graham crackers. 10/10
Owen: Sort of tastes like graham crackers with some of that maple dust on it. Impressed by it, less sweet than I thought, though. 9/10
Eva: I have zero complaints, not sure why they’re Elf themed. 10/10.
Carrington: Tastes like something I’ve had as a kid. 9/10
Yusur: Tastes nostalgic, smells like maple syrup. 9/10
Jacob: To clarify, these are not made like normal goldfish. They’re much more solid, and are reminiscent of the honey teddy grahams. I would eat these again, though they are a bit strong. 8/10.
Lindt Peppermint Cookie Ball (7.13/10)
Johanna: It smells minty; tastes like peppermint. 5/10
Yusur: Smells minty; tastes minty and overwhelmingly chocolatey. 4/10
Carrington: Smells like peppermint; tastes like mint chocolate chip ice cream. 10/10
Sienna: Minty smell; tastes like peppermint. 10/10
Owen: Delicious. Enough said. 10/10
Eva: Very good. I like the cookie crumbs inside. 10/10)
Jacob: All the Lindt goodness you know and love, but with a peppermint center. 9/10.
Nuolin: Peppermint smell and the harder chocolate shell is crunchy with chocolate, and the middle creamy center is all peppermint-y. 9/10
Oreo Festive Colored Creme (9.5/10)
Carrington: Tastes like how it is told. 10/10
Sienna: Smells like how an Oreo would smell. Tastes pretty good and not too strong. 10/10
Owen: I like the design. Tastes like an Oreo, which I have no problem with. 10/10
Jacob: The design is really neat, with some of the red filling serving as Rudolph’s nose. It tastes like a normal Oreo, but how can you improve upon perfection? 10/10.
Eva: I like the Rudolph design. 9/10.
Johanna: It tastes like a normal Oreo. 8/10
Nuolin: The shell has a cute penguin design, and the red and green filling is very festive. Smells like chocolate. Tastes is a regular Oreo. 10/10
Yusur: Smells like a normal Oreo. Tastes like a normal Oreo and looks pretty. 9/10
Twix Cookie Dough (8.14/10)
Carrington: I can kinda taste the cookie dough, but not really. 9/10
Sienna: Smells like chocolate. Tastes like a normal Twix. 10/10/10
Owen: Sort-of tastes like normal Twix, but I feel like there is some additional crunch and chocolate in it. Without the wrapper, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between original and this one. 8/10
Yusur: Smells normal. Tastes alright ,but the original is better. 7/10
Eva: That is like if a normal Twix was soggy. 8/10
Johanna: It tastes like chemicals. 6/10
Jacob: Tastes a lot like a normal Twix, but with a sweet, fake cookie dough taste reminiscent of the cookie dough bites you would get at a movie theater. 8/10.
Nuolin: Smells like a normal chocolate Twix. The inside is good, but its got a weird, fake sugary aftertaste. Honestly, I don’t eat cookie dough so it tastes just like regular Twix for me, but the base is less crunchy. 7/10
