After their season-ending loss last year in the State quarterfinals to Highland Springs, the boys basketball team is looking to bounce back stronger than ever. To make it back to States this season, they will need to focus on each game like it will be their last and not allow themselves to underestimate any opponents.

Leading the team is senior point guard Carter Wesson, who was a First Team All-Central Virginia member after putting up an average of 13.1 points per game to go along with his average 4.3 rebound. Wesson is specifically anticipating the Western games this season.

He wants to “get revenge for the last three years,” and to finally beat them twice in the same year before graduating. “We lost both at home and away last year so all the players are really excited about those games in particular.”

While they have lost key player Jason Breen, who made First Team All-Region, Wesson said that he thinks the is “promise for this year’s team to get back to States” and take home the title this time around. He also said that he and fellow seniors Christian Humes and Lamari Parler, will “need to step up and play an important role on this team.”

Junior point guard Hayden Yow is “looking to help out the team in whichever way he can,” no matter the position. He is prepared to “get the team motivated.”

The Patriots opened-up their season with a decisive 70-52 win over Eastern View at home on Nov. 29, but sadly suffered a three point defeat to Patrick Henry on Dec. 2. Wesson, Humes, and Parler have been the team’s top scorers for the past two games, all averaging over 14.5 points a game and staying true to their promise to step up this season.

Hoping to improve upon their 21-6 record from last year, the team is looking to get wins back on track as they travel to William Fleming for their first away game tonight, Dec. 9.
