In both academics and athletics Albemarle students have rocked their State competitions and are headed to Nationals in May and June.

Sophomore Micah Appiah and junior Lilian Hui will be traveling to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair May 9-15 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Appiah swept the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering category, earning first place at both the Regional and State level with his project on developing a hybrid-electric aircraft.
Hui took home first place at the Regional Science Fair and second place at the State competition in the environmental, earth, and planetary sciences category. Her project was on using a new method of analysis on how debris moves in the Chesapeake Bay in order to clean it more efficiently using interceptor devices.

Juniors Enrique Rodriguez, Andrew Smith and Hasini Vedhere dominated the documentary film competition at State History Day on April 25-26.
Rodriguez and Smith won first place overall for their team documentary “The American Mind: All Men Are Created Equal.” Additionally, they took home the Bobby Chandler Senior Project Award and scholarship.
Vedhere took home second place overall for her documentary “Revolution Beyond the Battlefield: How the Indian National Army Led to Political Collapse of the British Raj.” She also won the Betsy S. Barton scholarship.
The National competition will be from June 14-18 at the University of Maryland campus in College Park.

Finally, multiple Albemarle rowers qualified for the national championship at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association championships on May 2-3 in Fairfax Station
Seniors Kelsey Trostle and Livia Benson took home first in their senior double boat.
First-year rowers sophomore Malynn Blanchette and freshman Eva Boisvert placed first in their boat. The women’s junior quad boat of junior Lizzie Harrop-Williams, sophomores Ellison Rakness and Aislyn Fisher-Turner and freshman Amanda Smith also won their race and qualified for Nationals.
Juniors Will Scanlon and Evan Reed also had a golden boat and will go to Nationals. Senior Michael Znachonok and junior Finn Boisvert took silver but also qualified for Nationals. Znachonok has committed to row at Dartmouth College next year.
The Scholastic Rowing Association of America national competition will be in Oak Ridge, Tennessee May 22-23.
