A New “You”

Season 4 Switches Things Up

!SPOILERS FOR “YOU” SEASON 4 PART 1 EPISODE 1 AHEAD!

In this season of You, the stalker is being stalked. Oh, how the tables have turned.

The show’s main character and murderous romantic, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) has gotten himself entangled in a whodunit mystery. Part One of Netflix’s fourth season (released Feb. 9) of You leaves us surprised and intrigued.

After chasing his latest “You” to London, Joe lets her go and moves on. Joe establishes a new identity as a college professor, falls in with an upper-crust group of friends and, after a night of heavy drinking, wakes up with no recollection of the night and a dead body on the table.

True to his character, Joe immediately disposes of the body. He then receives a text from the murderer attempting to frame him, on an app that he doesn’t remember downloading. It seems that at this point in the show, it is his instinct to get involved with criminal activity and dangerous people.

During the second half, releasing on March 9, it seems likely that the story will start going off the rails because Joe finds out the killer’s identity at the end of Part One.

Season 4 is overall far better than Season 3. In Season 3, most of the actors were terrible and the plot had major holes. Penn Badgley was still believable as Joe, but the rest of the cast seemed like they had no idea what they were doing.

This season is good so far, but I can’t see what they could do with future seasons without ruining the show.

Most shows progressively get worse after the peak of a first season, some quicker than others, but not all shows. This season is good so far, but I can’t see what they could do with future seasons without ruining the show.

The success of You has compelled Netflix to continue milking as much money out of it as possible and will likely prolong the show for another season. While the show is still entertaining, it is about time for Joe to find a way out of this story once and for all.

Overall grade: B-
