Students are staging a walkout tomorrow, Feb. 13, in protest of the actions of the Trump administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as I.C.E.
The walkout will begin after Patriot Period, with students meeting at the stoplight near Hilltop Market across from AHS before walking to the Shops at Stonefield.
In accordance with Virginia State Code, those who participate will receive an excused absence. However, they must sign the attendance sheet before leaving to verify participation in a “civic engagement activity.” The protestors plan to return during third or fourth block.
Before leaving the building, administrators will ask students for their names and student I.D. numbers for attendance purposes. Families will also be notified if their student is participating in the protest.
When students return from the protest, they will be required to enter through the new gym entrance, go through the weapons screeners and check in with an adult. Students returning in the middle of a block will go to the auditorium to wait until class change. They will also be made to turn over any signs from the walkout.
The walkout comes as Charlottesville High School students organized a similar protest on Monday and Monticello High School also plans to stage one tomorrow.
The AHS chapter of Club America, which is the high school outreach arm of Turning Point USA, will be also hosting a prayer service for first responders, law enforcement, and service members during both lunches tomorrow. They will be meeting in the lobby.
